There are literally thousands of supplements and marketing ploys saturating the physical fitness industry. The trick is knowing which ones are actually beneficial and which ones are spouting false claims. Supplements can be highly beneficial to general health, muscle recovery and injury prevention if used properly and responsibly. Here are just a few of the supplements I recommend to my customers and continually endorse to those looking for the benefits they bring.

Multivitamin

Multivitamins should be taken by everyone, especially those that partake in a regular fitness routine. During a heavy workout, the body looses vital vitamins and minerals it needs for muscle recovery as well as the ability to remove foreign toxins. By taking a daily multivitamin, these lost nutrients are replaced making the body better able to recover from a workout as well as fight off unwanted infections.

Protein Powder

It is unfortunate that many people discourage the use of protein powder as they claim it resembles steroids and other chemical enhancements. This claim could not be further from the truth. A protein powder supplement can be highly beneficial before a workout as it promotes quality calorie intake as well as a reduction in fat accumulation.

Quite simply, protein powder is nothing more than powdered or dehydrated chicken. It is utilized for convenience when time does not allow for a full meal. However, it MUST be utilized in conjunction with a proper diet. If this is adhered to, recovery rate is increased, immune system receives a boost and success in your fitness goals are realized.

Using Creatine

Creatine remains the most controversial and misunderstood OTC supplement today. The general claims are liver and kidney failure, rage and testicular atrophy. Despite these claims and false beliefs, creatine still remains the most researched, studied and developed sports supplement to ever be discovered.

Ignore what you may have heard, besides slight water retention, creatine proves to have no other side effects associated with short or long term use, and further consists of completely natural ingredients. The benefits of creatine are many, with the most noticeable surrounding the decrease of lactic acid (the chemical causing “the burn associated with lifting weights), and a heavy decrease in recovery time.

Creatine Monohydrate is recommended at 5 grams daily. This can be absorbed into the muscles more quickly by mixing it with a cup of grape juice or other sugar based fruit juice. Creatine is generally available at local grocery and nutrition stores.

Supplements provide many benefits when used properly. When used in conjunction with a proper diet, your fitness goals can become much more obtainable. There are several other supplements that provide different benefits, however the three listed are the best to begin with before considering additional ones.

Many of us do not partake in the healthy benefits of a proper diet. Supplementation with vitamins is a great resource to incorporate those healthy benefits we are lacking. However, it is futile to think that continuing a poor diet and taking these vitamins will fill the gap in our diet. In order to reap the benefits of vitamins, we must try to implement a healthier way of eating.

If someone has high blood pressure, it is imperative that they choose a healthier diet. Otherwise, the body does not have the strength it needs to fight the disease. Using supplements and continuing to eat a diet high in saturated fat and red meat is futile as the liver becomes overtaxed with its already over burdened job of weeding out the bad stuff in your food.

At any rate, if you’re hoping to find a natural way to lower your blood pressure, supplements can help, that is, if you’re already trying to eat healthier. The following supplements are beneficial for lowering blood pressure:

1) CoQ10 – Coenzyme Q10 helps to strengthen and oxygenate heart muscles and contributes to metabolic processes. Studies have proven its significant benefit in treating both cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Take as directed on the bottle.

2) Essential Fatty Acids or EFA’s – This supplement is commonly found in fish oils and flaxseed oils and is said to contribute to the decrease in blood lipids and pressure. The Eskimos have a low rate of cardiovascular disease which is attributed to the fact that their diets consist mainly of coldwater fish.

3) Vitamin E – Not only is this vitamin a scavenger of free radicals, it also helps to protect against heart attack and stroke. In addition, having a low level of this vitamin in the body is a primary indicator of heart disease.

4) Calcium – This well known vitamin isn’t just for bone strength, it also helps maintain normal blood pressure. Research studies have proven that calcium can help modify high blood pressure in some patients.

5) Nicotinc Acid – This compound found in Niacin is shown in recent research to significantly lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body.

Other beneficial nutrients able to aid in lowering blood pressure include Zinc, Ginger, Vitamin D, Lecithin (granule or capsules), and Chromium.

Furthermore, there are several herbs that have beneficial properties for fighting hypertension. However, it is imperative that you consult a physician before taking any supplements as they can have severe interactions with any prescribed medications you may be taking.

Here are a few herb combinations that can assist in lowering blood pressure. Garlic, Valerian Root, Black Cohosh Root, Kelp, Cayenne, Blessed Thistle and Parsley Leaves. These herbs come in capsule form and are suggested to be taken four to eight times a day. However, once the desired blood pressure has been reached, it is important to gradually lower the dosage to maintain it. In addition, women who are pregnant or nursing should not use this combination.

This is a standard mantra that many health executives will espouse to those on the lookout for more perfect health. There’s good reason for this. Correct intake of vitamins leads to increased biological functions both psychological and physical that can significantly improve an individual’s standard of life. As such, it becomes critical to compromise on a source of vitamins and then follow through with the intake.

There are two prime sources of vitamins, organic food and vitamin supplements. These are essentially self explanatory terms. Particular foodstuffs carry specific vitamins and should you want to extend or decrease your express vitamin intake then you’ll need to center on these explicit foods. Vitamin C, as an example, is in oranges. Vitamin D, as an example, is present in eggs yolks.

Of course, the list of foods could go on forever as there are very few organic foods that are totally devoid of the presence of vitamins. It is suggested then that anyone interested in learning more about how to increase ones vitamin intake through foods should perform a little research to see which foods contain which vitamins and then to adjust ones diet accordingly.

Now, the other form in which one can take a vitamin would be in common additions. These additions are found in the standard tablet or tablet form and also in the more contemporary liquid form which has become favored latterly. If you are deficient in a selected vitamin area then it might be best to beef up your ingestion of the vitamin through any quantity of name brand vitamin products on the market.

It has got to be observed that one should use caution about overdoing it with any special vitamin. If one eats far too much of a selected vitamin, there could be a number of unlucky side effects that would happen. In addition, there’s always the chance of an overdose ensuing of too much of a vitamin so be careful with intake!

Potentially one of the finest if not the most effective way of taking vitamins would be to take a daily multivitamin. The point of a multivitamin is to stack a variety of different vitamins into one tablet. This tablet is then taken in the morning or evening as an one size fits all version of a vitamin and it’ll significantly supply the body with a number of nutritional needs. These also have the side advantage of being cheap as well so you actually can’t get it wrong with them!

The field of human nutrition is cluttered with controversial topics. One of the biggest controversies that persists today is the multiple vitamin supplement. Animal studies have shown for 40 years that nutritional optimization is beneficial in attaining optimal health. It has been the persistent claim of the American Medical Association over the past 30 years that only malnourished people and pregnant females need vitamin supplements. The question is: can a person optimize their nutritional intake in order to consume optimal levels of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)? To answer that question we cite a nutritional analysis of a hypothetical one day optimized menu containing the following: orange Juice, blueberries, multiple grain bread, egg, Smart Balance (a butter substitute), plantains, carrots, brown rice, black beans, roast white meat chicken, celery, broccoli, peanuts, apple juice, salmon, sweet potato, spinach, grape juice, pear, and tangerine.

The following list displays the nutritional parameters analyzed, compared to RDA values and ideal micronutrient levels (Kenneth Cooper, Kenneth Pellet) in an optimized 2000 CALORIES menu:

CALCIUM-660mg, compared to an RDA of 1000mg

IRON-15mg, compared to an RDA of 18mg

ZINC-9.9mg, compared to 15mg

Other nutritional values are within RDA values.

Interestingly, the saturated fat/monounsaturated fat/polyunsaturated fat ratio should minimally be 1/1/1, is actually 11/21/14. This ratio is consistent with the Mediterranean Diet. In the research journal article: Block, et.al. “Usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users: a cross-sectional study.” Nutrition Journal. 30:12 pages. October 24, 2007, they concluded that the study group that daily consumed a broad array of vitamin/mineral and herbal supplements were more likely to have optimal blood levels of micronutrients than the unsupplemented control group. They also were less likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes. There are numerous research articles that recommend the use of multiple vitamin/mineral supplements. In all fairness there are conflicting journal articles that suggest harmful effects of supplements. The AMA is always quick to warn potential supplement users of the dangers of overdosing on the fat soluble vitamins: A, E, D, and K. They often imply that these dangers apply to all supplements.

In a study: Zhang, et.al. “Effect of multiple micronutrient supplementation on anti-oxidative activity and oxidized DNA damage of lymphocytes in children”, Ahongjua Liu Xing Bing Xue Za Zhi, 26:268-72. April 26, 2005, on multiple micronutrient supplements in children, the researchers concluded that “supplementation of multiple micronutrients could effectively increase the (blood) levels of beta carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C and Selenium.” They also measured a significant decrease in oxidized DNA (gene damage), decreased levels of hydrogen peroxide (a natural, inadvertent oxidation byproduct of metabolism that is harmful to cells) and increased levels of glutathione peroxidase (enzyme that destroys hydrogen peroxide, thus protecting the cell). We can conclude that a multiple micronutrient supplement of the highest quality is an advisable part of any person’s nutritional regimen in order to obtain optimal health status.

Perhaps you have heard or have read on the many available resources on the Internet that children who suffer from the symptoms of ADHD are often discovered to have a deficiency of essential minerals in the body. For this reason, many believe that giving ADHD children vitamins and minerals would help in alleviating the symptoms. But are minerals and vitamins for ADHD really helpful?

In a way, vitamins and mineral products for ADHD kids are indeed helpful in addressing the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Why do we say this? Several studies have been done on children with ADHD. Results of some of these studies showed that some of the symptoms are indeed associated with the lack of certain minerals in the body. In fact, one study have revealed that 95% of children who were diagnosed with ADHD lack magnesium. ADHD children who lack this important mineral were shown to have ADHD symptoms such as excessive fidgeting, irritability, inability to stay focused, restlessness, confusion, anxiety, and learning disabilities.

With the results shown by some studies, it has been believed that the lack of essential minerals can indeed result to the symptoms or aggravated symptoms of ADHD in children. Therefore, it would be very beneficial if ADHD children are given the vitamins and minerals required by the body.

Aside from magnesium, other essential vitamins and minerals that should be given to children diagnosed with ADHD are vitamin B6, iron, essential fatty acids, vitamin B1 or thiamin, niacin, and zinc.

Vitamin B6 helps in the synthesis of brain chemicals. It can help boost normal brain function and development. Regular intake of vitamin B6 can help reduce behavioral problems in a hyperactive child. If you will be buying a multivitamin for your ADHD kid, make sure that it contains vitamin B6.

As we all know, iron is an essential nutrient for our body. Children who have iron deficiency may have decreased attention span and may have lack of social responsiveness. Ensure that your child gets enough iron from his daily diet or you may give him an iron supplement. However, you need to consult the doctor before giving your child any iron supplement as iron can be toxic to children who do not have iron deficiency.

Essential fatty acids (EFA) are very important to normal brain function. To ensure that your child gets the required EFA regularly, include foods with Omega 3 or Omega 6 in his diet. Foods that contain EFA are fish, flax seed oil, and primrose oil.

Vitamin B1 or thiamin is essential in improving your child’s concentration and focus. Studies have also shown that children with ADHD have a lack of this important mineral.

Niacin boosts an ADHD child’s brain function and energy production. It also helps in balancing blood sugar levels.

Zinc is another important mineral that have been shown to be lacking in children with ADHD. ADHD children who lack zinc were shown to have less responsiveness to stimulant drugs.

Along with giving your child these important vitamins and minerals, you may give your child homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic remedies, when used in conjunction with these vitamin and mineral supplements may be able to give optimum positive results.

So what are you waiting for? Start giving your child homeopathic remedy along with the required minerals and vitamins for ADHD! You will soon notice that your problems on ADHD symptoms are easy to deal with.
